Outsourcing web development? Is it really worth the hassle?

There are many reasons why businesses and individuals may choose to outsource their web development work. Based on our experience it is usually due to a company working to a tight budget rather than anything else.

The savings are only worth it if you have outsourced to the right freelancer or company. This can be hard to determine if you have little knowledge of the industry.

There are some major cons to outsourcing, especially to a company or freelancer outside of your own country.

Lack of transparency:

They may appear to be full of knowledge and claim to be able to deal with your project with ease, only for you to find out they are very inexperienced and struggle with some of the basics of coding. We have seen projects left totally ruined due to bad outsourcing.

More communication is required:

If they are working remotely in another country you may need to plan and explain your project in detail a lot more than you normally would. Especially if their native language is not the same as yours. Also, you may never be able to meet them in person to discuss the project which can make it harder to build trust.

Timescale is a problem:

They may have a busy work schedule but have still added your project to their workload. So, they may miss deadlines due to other commitments. Your project may not be their number one priority.

Lack understanding of your brand:

They may take it upon themselves to work on your project but not tie it in with the branding of your company. This happens more often than you might think as this tends to be something that is expected without needing to be discussed.

Costing you more money:

That is right, they may end up costing you more money if they have not met your expectations. The old saying of 'buy cheap, buy twice' applies to many industries including web development.

This is not a warning to put you off outsourcing at all but a reminder to choose carefully. Ideally go with a local company that you can trust. It may cost a little bit more but it will be worth it in the long run.
